This Echizen lacquerware is made using long-established traditional methods to create wooden items with a modern appeal.
The lacquering technique known as polishing would normally take years for the top layers to be worn down to reveal the colors underneath, but in recent times this polishing step can be done as a part of the production process to create a rich texture.
This Negoro tray begins with a base black color which is then polished with vermilion coloring and urethane lacquer. Craftsmen use both their skills and modern technology to make each piece by hand, one at a time.
