Mt. Fuji Special, Part4Source of Life, Mt. Fuji

Craft, Culture, Regional Produce2017.03.01

The reasons why Mt. Fuji is called the best mountain in Japan is not simply its height and beauty. Included in its "cultural assets" designated as a World Cultural Heritage site is nature, such as spring water created by Mt. Fuji. The abundance of natural blessings that Mt. Fuji brings are a source of life for both people and animals. In this final Mt. Fuji special feature, we would like to tell you about the "Source of Life, Mt. Fuji", and items related to this!

Fuji's Springs & Woodlands

What comes to mind first and foremost when thinking of the natural blessings that Mt. Fuji brings is the perpetual pure water that continually springs out from the ground. The truth is, there is no river on the surface of the mountain. On river-less Mt. Fuji, streams of melted snow water appear and gradually seep into subterranean ground, slowly filtering over a long period of time which is said to be decades.

The "Aokigahara Jukai" located northwest of Mt. Fuji is a primeval forest that has spread out on top of a lava flow which came from an eruption of the volcano. Water from snow that has melted on Mt. Fuji also flows underneath the Aokigahara Jukai. At the same time, "Oshino Hakkai", located northeast of Mt. Fuji, has lots of spring ponds that are a source of Mt. Fuji underground water. These mysteriously colored ponds are said to hold divine power and the dragon god is said to dwell there.

Mt. Fuji appears to be shining with dignity at all times. This may be due to the abundance of pure water essential to life nurtured beneath its surface.

In picture form! Clouds, Waves & Mt. Fuji

Boasting an overwhelming height, Mt. Fuji is subject to strong winds from all directions. The large amount of water vapor carried by the wind creates clouds of various shapes. These characteristic clouds have been given names and are used for weather prediction and are depicted in pictures. Also, a view of Mt. Fuji together with the rough waves of the sea is most exceptional.
